Almost a century old, the Owosso Community Airport began life in the 1920's and became the Owosso City Airport. Since that time, the airport has transformed from a sunny day "landing field" to a busy modern small airport serving Shiawassee County and surrounding areas.
On any given day, you can see everything from a students dream of their first flight in a small airplane to a corporate jet bring business men and women into town to conduct business.
You may also see everyone from the young child with their jaw wide open watching the airplanes to the seasonsed airline pilot, often with their jaws wide open also watching that special airplane that flew into or is based at the airport. It may be a brand new airplane, or a pristine century old example that's been tediously restored to better than new condition. Either way, the results are the same.
You also will see people sitting at the picnic table on the deck enjoying lunch or an ice cream cone or while sitting inside or outside at the delicious cafe watching arriving and departing aircraft and takling a little "hangar" talk.
As was once said by a local business woman, the Owosso Community Airport is the first thing that many users see when they fly into town. Some may only know the area based on what they see at the airport when they stop for a quick bite at one of the local restaurants, refuel their aircraft, or take a quick break. Others may be in town to manage their facility or conduct business and complete that multi-million dollar deal.
A 2017 study by the Michigan Department of Transportations's Bureau of Aeronautics estimated that the income generated by the airport was over $2M and the indirect spending in the county was over $8M creating an estimated 55 jobs.
